Two Year Itch. Is There a Cream for That?

If you are a regular reader, you know the story…I’m restless in my career.

Apart from working with the best boss in the world for almost 10 years, I’ve never stayed in one place for very long. The longest stint within the last decade has been 3 years. In case you’re wondering, I’ve held 6 jobs within the last 10 years, including the current one.

My restlessness is beginning to surface again. We are currently at the 1.5 year mark. Eeek, I have a problem.

What is my problem exactly? Good question. I have many issues, BUT the biggest factor in my restlessness is the “need to make a difference”. I don’t need to save the world, I don’t need public tributes, accolades or recognition of any kind, but I need to personally know that my contributions are doing something for the organization.

If I can’t take something that’s in disrepair and make it better or improve upon a process, I don’t see the need to continue. If I can’t do my job well, I don’t see the need to do it at all.

I was hired in this organization to come in, clean up, streamline processes and generally help people do their jobs better. Unfortunately, I am micro-managed to death and when I’m not being micro-managed, I’m being provided with the make-work projects that are trying to distract me from looking at the real issues that need to be dealt with. They have no purpose and will not make a difference at all. Pure silliness.

Rest assured, I’m not going anywhere anytime soon - I’ll be here for at least the next 5 years. Of course, I do have my annual review coming up, so that might change depending on the outcome of that meeting. I’ve never been one to kiss-up, but I’ve never been one to keep my opinions to myself either…

I was at my last job 21 yrs. I am at 6 yrs here and if all goes well they will roll me out the door on a stretcher. Hopefully later than sooner.

i so get what you are saying....i have stayed with companies but changed jobs a lot...until ran out of room and chnaged companies...smiles.

I'm the same way. I would love to find something where I'm happy to stay longer but I'm always looking at greener grass elsewhere. I have the same itch too!

The Holidays are behind us for another year, the parties are over and the decorations have been put away. Now what? Apart from some indoor exercise, maybe the odd movie, some reading, an afternoon nap on the weekend and perhaps some weight loss, there is nothing to look forward to in the short term. The Holidays are a bit of a let-down in that respect. So much hype and then when the excitement suddenly stops, I’m left feeling lost – like I’ve forgotten to do something. I usually like to complain about the winter weather in January, but I can’t even do that because it hasn’t been that bad… yet. It’s been cold, but we have certainly been lacking in the snow department. I know winter will arrive and then I’ll have LOTS to keep my “bitter meter” ticking, but until then, what’s a girl to do?

Q&A With Myself...

Today is an anniversary of sorts… Today marks my 2 nd anniversary at my current place of employment.   Over the last 2 years, I’ve had some  a lot of spare time to reflect upon the career path that I’ve chosen and what wrong turns have lead me to the cube where I sit today. I’m not happy with some of the choices I’ve made, but I’m not going to dwell on those – life’s too short .   Each wrong turn has led me to something different, some new experience.   I’ve met some great people, others that aren’t so great and those who should be forgotten, but sadly are etched upon my soul.  I’ve learned some things along the way and have laughed at myself and others while doing whatever it is that I do.   I question whether I should have become a sell out and an ass kisser, but realize that I just don’t have what it takes.  I like being able to hold my head high and know that I’ve gotten to where I am in life by being honest – with myself and others.
