Random Thougts - A Few Days Late...

The first full week back to work after the holidays has been brutal.   For the first 2 days, I kept my office door shut.   I was so miserable, I feared for the safety of my co-workers.   I think a lot of my mood has to do with the lack of carbs and good protein in my life these days.   I would seriously sell my first born for a big serving of garlic mashed potatoes, gravy and barbecued spare ribs. Speaking of The Boy, he heads back to school on Saturday.   I’ll be sad to see him go, but it will also be nice to get a complete night of sleep.   When he’s away at school, I sleep just fine, but when he’s home – I’m constantly listening for him and wondering if he’s home and if he's not, is he safe.   Stupid…I know. What is considered the cut-off date for saying “Happy New Year”?    Just wondering, but I believe it should 12:05 on January 1 st . I hate my treadmill, but considering "someone"...

Twinkies, Chocolate Chip Cookies, Doritos...

And so it has begun… As you may recall, I didn’t make any New Year’s resolutions this year because I didn’t want to disappoint myself. Instead, I foolishly made myself a few promises. WTH was I thinking? Obviously, I wasn’t… Now that 2010 has busted down the door and is standing before me like an unwelcomed house guest, I’ve realized there isn’t any difference between a resolution and a promise – it’s all crap and now I’m left to salvage my dignity and carry on with these promises to do something better with my life…or at least until my loved ones beg me to stop the nonsense and “eat a effin Twinkie already”. Yes, my quest to lose 20 lbs started today and I’ve realized something about myself – I think about food A LOT. How the hell am I going to make it? It’s only mid afternoon on Day 1 and I’m already contemplating cheating. I’ve also been rationalizing the need to NOT exercise this evening. In my mind, not eating anything of “value” toda...

Run Fat Boy Run...

Image
After surviving the temptations of high school and college and learning how to effectively say “NO” throughout adulthood; I have finally snapped and caved into peer pressure. I am a hypocrite. I am about to do something that I never thought I would. I am disappointed in myself and ashamed by my actions and now my only hope is that I do not bring shame upon my family. What have I done? Well apart from losing my mind, in a moment of weakness, I have agreed to join a friend and train for a 3K. Seriously what was I thinking? I despise running and particularly hate all the sweating, wheezing, breathless, nausea-related parts and unless I’m being chased by a raging rhinoceros, I would prefer not to do it. It’s always something I thought I might be interested in doing and competing in a triathlon is one of those things on my bucket list. In honesty, it’s that one thing I’ve put on the list to force me to do everything else on the list first – not thinking I would...

"Make a Wish Wednesday"

My Wish: I don't really have an exciting wish for this week, but a lot of little ones, which is the grand scheme of things are probably significant. I wish I was 20 lbs lighter (at least); I wish I actually liked to exercise (it would make dropping those 20 lbs a lot easier); I wish I enjoyed the taste of cooked vegetables. I don't know if it's the actual taste or the consistency when they are cooked, but either way - they make me gag; I wish I disliked the taste of cold beer(s), BBQ ribs and potato salad; I wish I had a "real" personal trainer to motivate me (not just my husband telling me that I need to run faster on the treadmill in order to see a difference). Yeah - I know he's a treat; I wish I had chubbier friends and co-workers. At least I wouldn't feel so bad about my situation if those around me had the same problem; I wish I had a little more self-control/self-discipline, but this is a tough one for me - particularly since I want to enjoy li...

Bootie (no, not gold or gems)

As warmer weather fast approaches, I’m faced with the reality that I’ve added some “junk in my trunk” over the winter – yep I’ve got a bigger bootie than I did in September of last year. Sigh… I’ve never really been fussed with a few extra pounds here to there and my motto has been: “life is too short to cheat yourself out of the things you enjoy”. Having said that, I enjoy wearing nice clothes – particularly when those clothes were just purchased at the end of last season and by last account, my hips have expanded yet again which will preclude me the ability to wear those nice clothes. Sigh… So, my New Year’s Resolution (yeah, I realize it’s a little late) is to loose a few pounds before summer. I’ve never been successful at dieting and quite frankly don’t intend to this time around either - I’ll simply practice moderation (medium fries instead of large), make healthier choices (like light beer) and exercise (yes, exercise). Although I do exercise on a regular basis, I...

Hooping for my Hips (and abs and butt and mental health)

I love my hula hoop! I have recently taken up “hooping” – a form of exercise involving nothing more than a glorified hula hoop and some hip movement. At first I was skeptical. I thought for sure, I would look like a moron and be totally uncoordinated. Well, I do in fact look like a moron and I was slightly uncoordinated at first, but the truth be told - I don’t care because I am having FUN - while exercising! For about thirty minutes, three to four times a week, I hoop away in the comfort of my living room and enjoy every minute of it. This is a big improvement for me since I typically spend more time complaining about my treadmill than actually using it, but now the time spent hooping doesn’t seem so daunting - I guess time actually does fly when you’re having fun. Bonus: I’m actually dropping some weight in the process. Yeah!
